Photography from L.A, letters from Japan and the importance of saying NO ! (and of course much much more)
Kicking off this week with this utterly beautiful photo series 'Emergent behaviour' by San Francisco based photographer Thomas Jackson. Inspired by the 'emergent' self-organising systems of insects and animals, he captures hovering installations of man-made materials in natural settings. I love his description of his process:
The images attempt to tap the mixture of fear and fascination that those phenomena tend to evoke, while creating an uneasy interplay between the natural and the manufactured and the real and the imaginary. At the same time, each image is an experiment in juxtaposition. By constructing the installations from unexpected materials and placing them where they seem least to belong, I aim to tweak the margins of our visual vocabulary, and to invite fresh interpretations of everyday things.
Another one to add to my one-day-I'd-love-to-own-one-of-these list (did you catch the rug from the MoMA in the last link loop ? going to be such a gorgeous imaginary home.)
You can check out his behind-the-scenes work via instagram here. So. Damn. Beautiful.
Carrying on with the theme of beautiful things I'd like to own, THIS Japanese letter set has me dreaming up all the love letters I'd send to my gal pals - nothing say's 'You're important to me' like . lovely little hand written note on delicate fancy stationary.
Though the sun has been shining bright this week, the nights have definitely gotten chilly. Whilst I'm grateful for the opportunity to indulge in copious amounts of tea drinking, I am not a fan of wearing a snow suit to bed so early into winter ! Cue THIS absolutely perfect blanket in my new obsession colour: Pine. Expect to see a lot more green loving posts this year.
This week has a been a week of reflection for me, reevaluating what I though was important, and looking at why it's important to let go. I'm not the most confrontational person, even with myself, so I had a go with theses handy School of Life 'Know yourself' prompt cards. Years ago a friend put me onto their youtube channel (a go-to for anyone wanting to brush up on philosophy) but it wasn't til I played them a a recent dinner party that I realised they had a shop, and some really handy products for getting yourself out of a thinking rut. Perfect gift for anyone nearing a 'significant birthday'.
On the subject of helping yourself, THIS article by super babe Dr Alisha Vara is a really good summary of that feeling women so often get in the work place. Read up on some strategies to beat that pesky imposter syndrome.
Super blogger and all round genius tech Tina Roth-Eisenberg has tweeted "No is a complete sentence". As is the world we live in now, the equally brilliant designer and podcast host Debbie Millman retweeted AND asked if she could put it on a t-shirt...and voila THIS excellent tee was born. Cotton bureau is a smart site for design and t-shirts, treat yourself to some good-cause-tees.
On the subject of treating yourself, I picked up some gorgeous candle holders at the Cross Street Markets, and went on the hunt for some nice natural candles to vamp up my dinner routine. THESE little honeys from Bread and Butter letter are the perfect size, perfectly formed dinner candles of my dreams. Extra points for New Zealand made AND local shop.
Last but not least this week, these little pocket manfriends. Sometimes relationships can be hard, but if you have to make someone your rock, let it be one of these pebbles - he might have a heart of stone, but he won't loose his schist when you're late to brunch.
